According to the US Census Bureau, the city stretches over 71.6 square miles and is home to 278,480 people, which makes it the ninth most populated town in Texas.
European settlers first populated the area in the 1840s. They were attracted to the numerous facilities here, including sawmill and gristmill. Initially, the city was set to be named after President Millard Fillmore, but the suggestion was ignored. With reference to the local terrain, it was later named “Plano”. Finally, the post office accepted this name and the city was incorporated in 1873.
